A Letter to the Customers from Gwyneth
When I started working at Wool-Tyme in May of 2021, the cross stitch/needlework section was serviceable, but really just an afterthought of a corner in a massively wonderful yarn store.
Fast forward two years and whilst it’s still in that same corner, it’s grown to now be a go-to spot for stitchers across Ottawa and beyond. We always have a healthy supply of the basics: pre-cut fat quarters of Zweigart fabrics in a variety of counts and colours, quality needles, hoops and Qsnaps in all sizes and DMC embroidery floss and tapestry wool. In the last year we’ve added over-dyed cottons by The Gentle Arts and DMC pearl cottons in various weights. A few months ago we hosted a trunk show from Trailhead Company and have since started carrying their gorgeous tencel embroidery acorn bobbins! And I’m going to let you in on a sneaky secret - something “silky” will be available soon!
We’re doing our best to regularly bring in a variety of new charts as well as some classic favourites. But, because we can’t stock them all, if there’s a chart we don’t have but our distributors do, we’re always happy to make a special order.
Stitchy customers are the some of the best people. When I see a customer in the needlework section I always like to ask them what they’re working on. Most people can’t get their phones out fast enough to show me and I love seeing the huge variety of projects! From sweet, small holiday ornaments to reproduction samplers of all sizes, to maximum colour full coverage designs, it’s the joy of stitching that I love seeing and is what bonds us together.
#IYKYK. Stitching is primarily a solitary craft, so I think we’re just excited to meet and connect with other stitchers who share the same passion out in the wild.
Speaking of connecting stitchers in the wild, Wool-Tyme has started a once a month social stitching group. Share a Stitch - Needlework is an opportunity for local stitchers to gather for two hours on a Saturday morning, stitch, show off WIPs and finishes and talk about our love of stitching. ...What's NextShare a Stitch: Needlework – Wool-Tyme This group is open to those who like to do needlework and are looking to work on their own projects in a social setting. Participants can share what they are working on and support each other in their projects as they see fit. Current available dates are May 11th and June 8th Wool-Tyme Knitting Class - Learn to Knit: Beginner You will learn how to cast on stitches, knit stitch, purl stitch, ribbing, increasing, decreasing and binding off. You will learn the difference between garter stitch and stockinette stitch and maintaining good tension whilst knitting. You will learn how to check your gauge (tension) by adjusting needle sizes and how to correct errors. You will learn how to read a simple pattern, including knitting abbreviations and terms. Share a Stitch: Knit and/or Crochet – Wool-Tyme This group is open to those who knit and/or crochet, and are looking to work on their own projects in a social setting. A staff member will be available to help people work through patterns/projects. Participants will be signing up for Tuesday morning sessions (10am-12pm) in May and June. Wool-Tyme Class: Learn to Crochet Held over two classes, this course is for those who have never crocheted before. Focus will be basic stitches like chain stitch, single and double crochet, joining in new yarn, good tension and even edges. Includes yarn, hook and a simple pattern to practice what you learn. Wool-Tyme Knitting Class - Learn to Knit: Level 2 This course is for beginner knitter who is familiar with the basics and is looking to go to the next level. Each class will be 2 hours in length. You will learn how to read a pattern and knit a shawl. Our experienced teacher will be there to help you along the way. Wool-Tyme Knitting Class - Fearless Finishing Learn to pick up stitches flawlessly. Seam a bound off edge and learn the 3-needle bind-off. Learn how to sew a sleeve into place. You will learn to make and space buttonholes. We will also review placement of increases and decreases, gauge and swatching, how to choose the right size, basic yarn classification, and blocking. Wool-Tyme Crochet Class - Crochet Level Two: Variegated Scarf In these sessions you will learn how to crochet a scarf and read a simple crochet pattern. The stitches being used in this crochet scarf pattern are as follows: chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet. Wool-Tyme Class: Learn to Knit Socks Learn to knit socks with double pointed needles from the cuff down. This course is perfect for the experienced knitter wanting to try socks from a different direction. You'll learn how to cast on, knit on 4 needles, turn the heel and finish a sock. |
