Learn to knit socks from the toe up! This class is perfect for the first-time sock knitter or the knitter who's been wanting to try socks from a different direction. You'll learn how to cast on at the toes, knit in the round using the Magic Loop technique (double-pointed needles are welcome, too!), calculate a perfect fit, turn the heel, and cast off using a stretchy method. (For those of you already familiar with a little sock lingo, we'll be working a German Short-Row Heel, using Judy's Magic Cast On, and Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.) You'll learn troubleshooting, customization, and fixing, too. A welcoming, fun class to introduce you to sock knitting.

An Introduction to Amanda
Amanda is a new teacher to Wool-Tyme. We’ll let her introduce herself:
“My name is Amanda Schwabe, and I’m a yarnaholic, knitting teacher, and independent knitwear designer. I started knitting in 1999. I’ve been learning new techniques constantly since then. My specialty is reading knitting and fixing mistakes. I’m very comfortable with cables, lace, stranded colourwork, short rows, double knitting, and ripping out mistakes. I have knit hats, sweaters, shawls, scarves, mittens, gloves, socks, blankets, soakers, longies, amigurumi — just about everything at least once. I’d love to learn twined knitting someday, and I’m fascinated by traditional colourwork techniques.
I have two goals:
- To make knitting feel easier and more fun for everyone, and
- To create patterns that I would want to wear myself (or dress my kids in), with instructions that will not end up on the Yarn Harlot’s “Dear Designer” list.”
Brioche knitting is not nearly as hard as it looks! You can create beautiful, complex-looking items using this technique. Brioche is a form of double-knitting that produces deep textural patterns which are shadowed or highlighted with a second shade. In this 2 part series, you will learn the basics of Brioche knitting, including the cast on for knitting Brioche flat and knitting Brioche in the round, learn the basic Brioche knitting technique, the finishing/casting off of brioche, and troubleshooting, and get started on a personal project.
- Part 1- Sat. Oct. 26, 2019, 9 am to 12 pm
- Part 2 - Sat. Nov. 9, 2019, 9 am to 12 pm
Entrelac is an interesting technique that creates an over-under woven look. It can be as simple as every square done in stocking stitch, or each little square can be something different. Once you know how to do Entrelac the possibilities are endless. Over two sessions you will learn the base triangle, right and left side triangles, standard Entrelac rectangles, finishing triangle, knitting in reverse, and how to troubleshoot your pattern.
- Part 1- Sat. Oct. 26, 2019, 1 to 4 pm
- Part 2 - Sat. Nov. 9, 2019, 1 to 4 pm

Wool-Tyme and Our Community
Blankets for our Community
Wool-Tyme collects yarn and blanket donations for the Ottawa area. We collect blankets for children which are distributed under the Project Linus banner and we collect blankets for adults as well. The blankets are given to various charities around Ottawa including women’s shelters, and charities for the poor and the homeless.
Donations (yarn or blankets) must be new material, machine washable and dryable, and be free of odours (e.g. smoke) and pet hair. You can come and join the volunteers from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of every month (at Wool-Tyme, 190 Colonnade Rd S, Ottawa) to sew on tags, piece together squares, or make blankets. Thank you to everyone who has donated yarn, or made squares, blankets, or quilts.
Closed until 12:30 pm on Remembrance Day (Monday, November 11)
